8 Ways to Let Recruiters Know You're Job Seeking

If you are currently employed and job seeking, it is risky to announce on LinkedIn that you want a new job. This is a good way to lose your job fast. So, managing the job search takes a bit of discretion and LinkedIn communication skill.

8. Change a setting on your LinkedIn profile

Go to your LinkedIn account and change the setting that lets recruiters know you are open to opportunities. It is a subtle change and you can always plead ignorance if someone in your company finds out you did this. For example, if they find out just say, “LinkedIn? I barely use it. Let me change that setting. I had no idea that was happening.”

However, this is not enough to let all recruiters know you are job seeking.

7. Upload a professional profile picture

A subtle move, again, but if you ever look at the LinkedIn profile pics of people who are employed, chances are they did not put much work into it. At Find My Profession, we often notice during LinkedIn profile makeovers that the picture has to be changed before starting the job search.

6. Start making your profile experience easier to digest

If you want recruiters to read your experience sections on LinkedIn, you have to make it easier to read. Packing information into large paragraphs makes it very hard to understand what you had achieved or what you do best. Use bullet points for achievements and plenty of white-space to separate the information. They do it for job descriptions, too, and so should you.

5. Show your career trajectory on LinkedIn

In the experience section, list out the companies you worked with, job duties, job titles, and most importantly, your accomplishments. Do not just copy and paste your resume, but the resume information should reflect its content. Recruiters notice when information on resumes and LinkedIn do not match.

4. Add contact info in your summary section

Most people will not know your current contact information. Make it easier for recruiters to contact you. Besides, only 1st-degree connections can see the contact information. Recruiters would much rather speak to you than InMail you.

3. Make your summary engaging

LinkedIn summaries help others figure out a bit of your personality and what you want to do in your career. Make your summary engaging and explain things in your profile that may lead to questions. Meanwhile, use the right keywords related to the industry or job you wish to work in.

2. Optimize all sections with keywords

Your headline, summary, and experience should all contain the keywords related to the type of jobs you hope to be contacted for while job searching. A good way to do this is to take any job description from an online job listing and use the words the job description uses when describing yourself in a comprehensive manner.

A bad way to do this is to take a list of popular industry words and paste them into your sections. It makes your resume hard to read and it looks like a deliberate and poor attempt to manipulate search results (ie. makes you look clueless).

1. Work on building your network

Connect with others in your industry. Do not just connect with everyone. Reach out to recruiters and try to connect with more than 500+ people, which is the largest number LinkedIn shows on your profile. You are showing recruiters that you are willing to do the work to get noticed.

You can still write recommendations, change your URL to make you more “search-friendly”, and much more, without ever being spotted as someone trying to leave his or her current job.
